Tatoos and Diversity

Are tattoos more prevalent in geographic areas with more racial homogeneity?

Perhaps the resurgence of tattoo popularity is due to increased racial diversity around the world, or the portrayal of such diversity in the media. In those places where racial diversity is not a reality, individuals feel themselves inadequately physically distinguishable from their peers. They thus make markings to become differentiated from the homogeneous mass...

So, for example, take the young lady who I was walking behind this morning exiting the subway at 14th street. From behind she was mousy, blond, of medium build and average style. Yet she wore a shirt which dipped slightly from the neck, revealing the laurel tattoo on her upper back. This made a heretofore indistinguishable individual highly identifiable!

Disclaimer: I am not talking about all tattoos; some are expressive in ways which go beyond identification in a crowd or in case of a disfiguring accident. Also not to be forgotten is the tattoo as a fashion.

Walrus Gives Himself Pleasure

What I like most about this video is the young woman's narration, and she's cute too!
